A poor couple in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho is calling for community help to cover medical treatment for their daughter who is struggling with a rare cancer.
Vo Thi Cam My, a grade-seven student from a Truong Xuan Secondary School in Thoi Lai District has been bed-ridden for months due to a kind of leukaemia.

My’s mother Pham Thi Nhang said that she found a small node on her left leg. Taken her to Can Tho Paediatrics Hospital, doctors there diagnosed that this was the symbol of a skin disease and nothing was serious.
A short time later, the node became bigger. This time, she was sent to the local tumour hospital. Doctors said she needed a biopsy for the diagnosis, but, her father did not agree and take her come back home for using herbal medicines.
However, since then, her health condition has turned much worse. Doctors at HCM City Paediatrics Hospital said that she suffered from non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, a kind of leukaemia.
The disease has caused a metastasis to many different parts of the body, particularly the kidney, causing her to be unable to urinate.
After the recent operation, the girl’s health has seen an improvement and a signal for life. Doctors allowed her to return home for treatment, but she will have to undergo chemical chemotherapy.
Her father Vo Van Hung said that he really felt regret refusing medical suggestions to give My biopsy for diagnosis earlier, instead of taking her to come back home for using herbal medicines.
