The Vietnam Red Cross Society in Hanoi launched a campaign to collect donations through mobile texting for those affected by the record cold spell in the northern provinces.

The campaign launched at a ceremony today, and called ‘Warm Clothes in Winter', aims to mobilise people's donations nation-wide and share it with the disadvantaged people, especially the ethnic and minority people in the northern provinces, VNRC Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Xuan Thu said.
People can support the campaign by texting AA to 1408. Each SMS costs VND16,000 (US$0.7).
People may also visit the VNRC headquarters at 82, Nguyen Du Street in Hai Ba Trung District, Hanoi, or send money to its account number 12010000036656 at the Vietnam Investment and Development Bank.
On Monday, the VNRC donated VND100 million (US4,400) to provide warm jackets to poor students in the Lang Son, Lai Chau and Lao Cai provinces, especially the ethnic and minority people.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, more than 7,000 poultry were killed while about 10,600 hectares of farm produce and more than 80,000 ha of industrial crops were destroyed by the cold spell in the country.
