Police crack down foreigners for illegal residence

Police in HCM City said they have detained 21 foreign men for staying in the city without personal papers.

Police in HCM City said they have detained 21 foreign men for staying in the city without personal papers following a raid on the evening of December 28.

The raid took place at the Khang Gia apartment block on Phan Huy Ich Street where more than 100 foreigners of African origin were said to live. 52 were detained.

Police were forced to release 31 people as there were no grounds for their detention, while the remaining 21 that failed to be able to produce valid visas and passports were continued to be held.

Senior lieutenant-colonel Pham Ngoc Tien, head of the city Police Department's Immigration Board, said that the detained men came from countries, including Nigeria and Cameroon.

According to the initial investigation, some of them had been staying in Vietnam without personal papers for several years.

Tien added that local police are conducting further investigations.
