Danang Airport begins new terminal for APEC 2017

Ground was broken for the Danang International Airport, which should be completed in time for the APEC 2017 summit, at an estimated cost of VND3.5trn.

Ground was broken on November 15 for the Danang International Airport, which should be completed in time for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) 2017 summit, at an estimated cost of VND3.5trn (USD166m).

The main terminal will cover 21,000 square metres and its design is inspired by seagulls.

The Ministry of Transport said the terminal will have capacity to serve six million passengers a year, the first phase of a plan that will see continued expansion of the airport by 2020 and 2030.

Nguyen Nhat, deputy minister of transport, said by the existing Danang Airport will be handling 6.7 million passengers by the end of the year, exceeding capacity. The new terminal should be ready for trials by March 2017 and will take passenger overflow, and serve the APEC Summit in 2017.
