President Sergio Mattarella was born on July 23, 1941 in Palermo. He received a PhD in Law at Sapienza in Rome in 1964. Since 1983, he has become a national representative of the Catholic-inspired Democratic Party of the Left of Italy.
Sergio Mattarella served as Italian Minsiter of Parliament Relations between 1987 and 1989 and then stood as Minister of Education during 1989-1990.
In 1998, Sergio Mattarella was Deputy Prime Minister of Italy. He became Defence Minister from 1999 to 2001; a member of the Italian Parliament during the 2001-2006 tenure; and a member of the Italian Parliament cum Judge of Constitutional Court in 2011.
Since January 31, 2015, he has occupied the role of President of the Republic of Italy.
