Nine year-old To Thi Bich Ngoc from Nam Dinh Province has had to leave school to take care of her ill father in hospital while her mother suffers from mental illness.

Dr. Hoang Manh Hung from Hanoi's Bach Mai Hospital said To Van Cung had been diagnosed with cirrhosis and ureteral stones. When Cung was admitted, he has no one else in Hanoi to depend on but his daughter, who only brought a few changes of clothes but no money.
Sympathetic to their situation, the hospital agreed to admit Cung and help them with daily meals.

"My wife was diagnosed with mental illness a long time ago. My father died and my mother is too old to help. My siblings are poor so I can't ask them for help," he said. "Because the pain had become unbearable I’ve had to ask Ngoc to leave school to come with me."

Nguyen Trung Trinh, head of Tram Phuong Village said Cung's wife, Nguyen Thi Tuyet often came be found wandering alone.
"I love him and I'll stay to take care of him. But I'm also afraid that I'll be unable to catch up with my school work if I’m away too long," Ngoc said.
