Ly Son island
Deputy Chairwoman of Ly Son Pham Thi Huong said the plant would have a daily capacity of 2,000 cubic metres of water.
She expected that once the plant is completed, it will reduce the shortage of freshwater during the dry season in April and May, thereby improving the living standards of more than 16,000 island inhabitants.Ly Son currently has only one freshwater lake, Thoi Loi, containing around 20,000 cubic metres, and more than 500 water wells of different types. These valuable water resources are being extracted to irrigate more than 100 hectares of onions and other vegetables, as well as for the daily needs of local residents.
However a number of wells have shown signs of being salinised, placing the freshwater resources under increasing strain.
Earlier, Doosan Vina funded a desalination plant worth VND21 billion (US$945,000) with a daily capacity of 200 cubic metres, partially meeting the demand of residents on An Binh island.
