2,000 workers will be assigned to prevent flood in Hanoi during National Day
The National Hydrometerology Forecasting Centre predicts that there will be heavy rain in northern Vietnam from August 31 through to September 3 with an estimated rainfall of 40 centimetres.
In Hanoi, storms and wind gusts, will be experienced especially on the National Day, September 2 so warnings of flooding have been raised.
Vu Quang Suong, deputy director of Hanoi Water Drainage Company, said, “We’ll assign 2,000 workers and staff along with 100 vehicles to be on standby to work 24 hours per day and be ready to quickly respond in case of heavy rain on National Day holiday.”
Suong noted that the company has requested its subsidiaries to dredge and clean water drainage systems to prevent possible flooding.
Due attention would be focused on highly-populated areas, streets that have been earmarked for events during the holiday period, bus and train stations, bus stops, entertainment places and markets.
Quick measures must be taken to ensure smooth water drainage at streets where there will be marches on the National Day, including Nguyen Thai Hoc, Kim Ma and Lieu Giai, and Nguyen Thai Hoc, Trang Thi, Hang Khay, Trang Tien, Hanoi Opera House and Tran Khanh Du.
Water pumping stations such as Yen So, Kim Lien, Tan Mai, Trung Tu, Dong Bong I, Dong Bong II, and Thanh will be on standby to work 24 hours a day and co-ordinate with agencies to regulate dams to ensure water drainage for the city.
He said that the municipal government and Department of Construction have approved a water drainage project in the capital since early 2015 but to date 23 points in 12 districts in the city are still facing high risk of being flooded during heavy rains, including Phan Boi Chau Road and Ly Thuong Kiet, Thai Ha and Huynh Thuc Khang.
