Fisherman Nguyen Van Phu, 29, captain of fishing boat No. QNg 90657-TS, said his boat carrying 11 fishermen was working off the Paracels and had caught six  tonnes of seafood.

On June 10, the boat was anchored some 14 nautical miles from Bom Bay Island when it was surrounded by four Chinese vessels and boarded by six men, who forced the crew to transfer its haul and stole fishing equipment.

“They beat us when we moved the seafood to their ships too slowly. We were all angry but couldn't do anything because we were surrounded," Phu said.

He said losses amounted to VND800m (VND38,095).

On June 1, Vietnamese vessel SAR 412 of the Da Nang Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) in central Vietnam was on the way to rescue a fisherman on a fishing boat from Quang Nam Province off Spratly archipelago, it was confronted by a Chinese vessel.

On May 30, Vietnamese fishing vessel BD 96680 TS was attacked by a Chinese coast guard ship while it was working at 15 degrees of the north latitude and 112 degrees east longitude in Vietnam's Paracel waters.
