Nguyen Thi Cam is now in distress, her husband, Nguyen Khac Mau, suffering mental illness, their youngest son disabled by a brain-damaging fever when he was just six months old, and she herself sick.

They live in a run-down house in Hau Village, Bac Giang Province, but life was good for a loving couple and their two sons, until it wasn't.
Nguyen Khac Linh suffered a high fever and had a seizure, but by the time they could get him to a distant hospital, it was too late. Cam has cared for him for more than 20 years, mostly on her own. Mau was often absent and began wandering aimlessly, unable to communicate, unable to work, as mental illness took hold.

Cam struggled to keep her elder son in school, while caring for her husband and their youngest, but he decided to leave school to find work so he could ease his mother's burden.
She has now been diagnosed with chronic bronchitis and degenerative bone disease.
"I wish I could bring my husband to hospital and if my son could walk again, I'd die for it," she said.

Duong Duc Trang, chairman of Liem Chung Commune People's Committee, said, "Cam is the special case in our commune. We try to help them, but it's not enough."
