Bolts stolen from Noi Bai-Lao Cai expressway

Hundreds of bolts along sections of guardrail on the A1, A2 and A3 sections of Hanoi - Lao Cai expressway to secure the railings were missing, with only one bolt holding the guardrail where nine should have been present, rendering them ineffective in the event of an accident.

“Those who stole guardrail bolts were children who aged from nine to 15,” said Bui Dinh Tuan, director of Vietnam Expressway Operation and Maintenance Limited Liability Company (VEC O&M),

“Relevant authorities caught and reported the thieves and handed dossiers to local governments for a solution,” Tuan said.

He said three children were found stealing guardrail bolts on December 25 at a road section running through Phung Xa Commune in Phu Tho Province.

Other affected sections were in Tan Kien and Phu Ninh Communes and Phu Tho Township in Phu Tho Province.

On April 25, two other children were caught stealing the bolts at a road section running through Nam Viem Commune in Vinh Phuc Province.

Investigators said the children sold the bolts to waste metal traders. Local authorities contacted their parents and made them sign a commitment of accountability for any future misconduct.

Maintenance is expected to be completed in the next two weeks.
