A section of the National Highway in Binh Thuan Province was jammed for 10 hours as thousands of local people gathered in protest against serious pollution from a thermal power plant.

The highway was blocked in Tuy Phong District from 5:30pm on April 14 to early April 15.
Sine operations began six months ago, the Vinh Tan Thermal Power Plant, part of Vinh Tan Power Centre, which is among the country’s key projects, has discharged ash, smoke and dust into the environment, affecting local people’s life.

Local residents complained to local authorities many times, but nothing was done.
On April 14, thousands of local people joined a demonstration against the plant, blocking the highway and causing tailbacks of thousands of vehicles.
Police were called to divert traffic around the protest.
