Traffic jams are encircling HCM City as huge numbers of people try to return to the metropolis as the Tet holiday draws to a close.
Since the morning of the fourth day of the Lunar New Year yesterday (February 22), thousands of people have been returning to HCM City.
National Highway 1A in the southwest is a river of motorbikes and, by 2pm, the T-junction between National Highway 1A and Trung Luong-HCM City Highway, was jammed, with long tailbacks of traffic.
Many people said they chose the fourth day of the Lunar New Year to make the trip back from their home villages because it is considered unlucky to set out on a journey on the fifth day.
Some said they wanted to get back to HCM City before the end of the holiday so they could rest prior to resuming work on the sixth day of the New Year (February 24).
To alleviate traffic congestion after Tet, the HCM City police have assigned more traffic control officers on main access routes to the city.
