Ho Phi Uoc, 14, from central Ha Tinh Province, is spending this Tet alone in a ragged hut in Dong Van Hamlet of Thach Van Commune after his mother died a few months ago.

His mother, Ho Thi Mong, was diagnosed with stomach cancer in early 2014, but could not afford medical treatment, and despite the pain, tried to work until she died late last year.
She had to drop out of school at an early age and work to earn money for her family. Mong met and fell in love with a man in HCM City, but when she became pregnant he abandoned her.
Mong raised Uoc alone, and he got good grades at school, while looking after their home while his mother was at work, until she fell ill.
He takes care of himself
“When Mong was in critical condition, she had to lie in bed but did not want to tell his son about her situation,” one of their neighbourers said.
Uoc is now alone. His relatives are too poor to support him. “I wish my mother would come back to me,” he said.

Pham Le Hoa, the principal at Van Tri Secondary School where Uoc is studying Grade 8, said, "He is a good student. We’re trying to support him but that is just modest. We don’t know how his future will be."
