Navy Kilo-class sub arrives at Cam Ranh Port

Vietnam's navy has taken delivery of its third Russian-built Kilo-class submarine, the HQ-184 Haiphong.

Vietnam's navy has taken delivery of its third Russian-built Kilo-class submarine, the HQ-184 Haiphong, which was delivered to Cam Ranh Port by Netherlands heavy-lift transport vessel the Rolldock Star.

The Kilo submarine arrived at Cam Ranh Port in the central province of Khanh Hoa at around 7pm on January 28 after a 44-day voyage from St. Petersburg, Russia.

The HQ-184 Haiphong is the third Kilo-class Russia has built for Vietnam under a USD2bn contract to construct six diesel-electric submarines for the Vietnam Navy.

The submarine has 533mm torpedo tubes, and is armed with torpedoes, mines and Kalibr 3M54 cruise missiles. It has a displacement of 3,100 tonnes, has a top speed of 20 knots, a maximum depth of 300m and carries a crew of 52.

The Kilo-class is designed primarily for anti-shipping and anti-submarine operations in relatively shallow waters.
