Two seriously ill poor children in Nghe An Province have received more than VND358m (USD17,000) in donations from DTiNews readers to help with their treatment.

Phan Nhat Tien, aged two, in Dong Ha Village, received VND251.340.000. Tien was born with a small tumour, which made his belly grow large after just 16 days. He was transferred to Hanoi Pediatric Hospital after being diagnosed with retroperitoneal tumors.

His family borrowed money for initial surgery, but that ran out and doctors wanted him to undergo chemotherapy at a cost of VND100m.

Unable to pay, Tien's parents decided to go home, but tumours regrew and spread to his genital so they borrowed more money to admit him to Nghe An Oncology Hospital. Sympathising with Tien's cases, the doctors persuaded Tien's parents to keep him in hospital and called for help.

"I want to thank kind-hearted readers. Many people have visited us in hospital," Tien's mother said.

The donation helped carrying out a surgery and Tien was just released from hospital.

Another boy in Nghe An Province, three-month-old Thien Phuoc, died before the donation of VND107.275.000 could reach his family.

Phuoc had congenital heart disease and was born without an anus. Doctors at the provincial hospital opened an artificial one on his belly, but urged Phuoc's parents to go to Hanoi for surgery. Without money, they decided to stay home. Phuoc passed away a month later.

Nguyen Thi Man, Phuoc's mother, said that after paying off his medical bills, she wanted to give back some of the money to the charity fund of DTiNews. "My son has gone. I want to donate VND10 million to support other disadvantaged people," she said.
