Two ill women fight off starvation

Two poor disabled women in Hai Duong Province are in desperate need of financial support just to have enough food.

Two poor disabled women in Hai Duong Province are in desperate need of financial support just to have enough food.

Vu Thi Van and Dinh Thi Mien

Vu Thi Van, from Ly Dong Village, watched as her husband walked away because she could not give him a child. She married another man and gave birth to two children, however when she was five-month pregnant with the second child she suddenly became sick and never recovered. Her fingers and toes became twisted. Van's second child, Dinh Thi Mien, has bad health and her mental development was stunted.

Her eldest son, Dinh Huu Doanh, went to Dak Lak Province to look for job. After years of heavy work, he was diagnosed with tuberculosis. Van lost contact with him after that while her daughter became a single mother.

In order to support the family, Mien becomes a beggar. Then, in May, Mien tried to go out to find food despite heavy rain. When Mien returned, she fainted from exhaustion and her entire body was paralysed. The neighbours and local authorities donated over VND10 million, but the money was only enough for 10 days in hospital.

Meat is a luxury for the family

At 78 years old and in bad health, Van cannot do anything around the house, so her grandchild had to drop out of school. He catches snails, crabs and some wild vegetables by the river for food. Sympathetic neighbours often come by to help with housework and take care of Mien.

Thach Khanh Hoan, the party secretary of Vinh Hong Commune, said, "I've never seen a worse situation. Van's relatives either live far away or they are too poor to help her. We built a charity house for them, but can't help them with daily meals. We hope kind people will help them."

"I wish for a full meal, enough money to take Mien to hospital and for my grandchild to continue his studies," Vu Thi Van said.
