Crowds of people queued up to pay tribute to General Vo Nguyen Giap at his Hanoi home at 30 Hoang Dieu Street on October 4 on the occasion his one-year  death anniversary.

Nguyen Thiet Nang from Nam Tu Liem District came with his son. Nang said he was taking the boy to pay the tribute because he wanted his son to know about the great contributions that others had made for the country, which now allow him a comfortable life.

Giap, the first Vietnamese general, was born on August 25, 1911 in An Xa village, Loc Thuy Commune, Le Thuy District, Quang Binh Province. General Giap led large campaigns during the Vietnamese wars against the French and the US.

His name is closely linked to the historic victory at Dien Bien Phu in 1954, which led to the withdrawal of the French. He was also instrumental in fighting the Americans who replaced French troops.
