There are around 1,200 in which Chinese fishing boats cross over into Vietnamese waters each year, according to statistics released at a conference in Danang on September 19.

The conference was aimed at reviewing the Vietnam-China Agreement on Fishery Cooperation in the Gulf of Tonkin.
A report released during the conference said that in the past decade Vietnamese ministries, businesses and localities worked closely to realise the agreement by mapping out plans for the implementation of the agreement and the education of fishermen about the policy.
Offices executing and supervising the enforcement of the agreement have coordinated in maintaining fishing activities and keeping maintaining security at sea. The granting of licenses to fishing boats has conformed to stipulations in the agreement.
During the 10-year the agreement has been in effect, the China has detained and fined 44 Vietnamese fishing boats for violations. Still, Chinese fishing boats make regular incursions into Vietnamese waters for illegal fishing.
Nguyen Ngoc Oai, deputy head of the General Fisheries Department, said that the seafood in the Gulf of Tonkin Gulf is decrease due to over-exploitation.
To improve the situation, both Vietnam and China have released fish into the sea area to cover the drop.
