A poor couple in the northern province of Yen Bai has resorted to selling their blood to finance the treatment of their children who are suffering from serious diseases.
Hoa and her ailing sons
The house of La Thi Quynh Hoa’s family, is in the remote area of Dai Minh Commune, Yen Binh District and appears unkempt, covered by grass and trees.
Hoa had twins that were delivered prematurely, in the 7th month of pregnancy. She suspects that her manual labour during the pregnancy is the cause along with their living condition.
After birth, the two boys, named Tuan and Tu, had to spend four months at hospital. But, due to the family's financial difficulties, their medical care was inadequate.
When Tuan was two, he was diagnosed with a cardiac problem. The couple had to sell their house and move to their parents residence.
Some months later, doctors diagnosed Tu with leukemia. Over the past six years, she has taken the son to various places for better treatment. Unable to deal with the difficulties, the parents are at a loss for what to do.
The twins are in desperate need of the community support
Hoa said that now their situation is such that every time one of the children needs to be taken to the doctor, one of the parents needs to sell blood to afford it. Still, Hoa's health has deteriorated, and is unable to sell blood anymore.
Nguyen Manh Hung, head of Dai Minh Commune Police, said the family's condition is the most difficult in the locality and even their extended family is unable to help financially.
