A earthquake of 4.3 on the Richter scale shook Dien Bien Province on June 26, the strongest earthquake this year.

This quake took place at 7:44pm with its focal depth at around 9.5km and an epicenter near Thanh Nua and Thanh Luong Commune, which lies along the Muong Lay - Dien Bien fault. The earthquake lasted 2 or 3 seconds.
According to Nguyen Thai Son, Chief of the Seismic Observation Station of Dien Bien Phu City, both the intensity and its aftershock aftershocks were not severe enough to cause notable damage to infrastructure in the region.
He went on to say, however, that large buildings and other constructions should be checked for damage.
In the past six months, Dien Bien Province has experienced five earthquakes with increasing magnitude. There has been an increase in frequency of earthquakes in Dien Bien since 2013.
