Nguyen Duc Kien appeals his verdict

The Hanoi People’s Court said it has received the appeals of Nguyen Duc Kien and the others, namely former General Director, Ly Xuan Hai, former Vice Chairman, Trinh Kim Quang and a former board member, Huynh Quang Tuan on June 23.

According to the verdict of the Hanoi People's Court, handed down on June 9, Nguyen Duc Kien, 50, is found guilty of fraud, tax evasion, illegal trade and "deliberate wrongdoing causing serious consequences". Kien was also fined two sums; one of VND75 billion (USD3.5 million) and and another of VND100 million (USD4,600) because of his misappropriation of funds and other violations.

However, in his appeal Kien maintained his innocence and asked the court to reconsider their decision and review the evidence against him.

Hai was sentenced to eight years in prison, while Quang and Tuan received four years and two years, respectively, for the charge of intentionally violating the State’s economic management regulations causing serious consequences.

According to the law, June 24 was the deadline for any appeals from four others convicted in in the case case;  former ACB Vice Chairpersons Le Vu Ky and Pham Trung Cang, and Tran Ngoc Thanh and Nguyen Thi Hai Yen, former Director and Chief Accountant of Hanoi ACB Investment JSC.
