A poor family in Soc Trang Province with four members suffering from serious diseases is in need of financial help.
Mr. Khoe and his eldest son who has received heart surgery
The family of Mr. Nguyen Van Khoe, 49, from Dai Hai Commune, Ke Sach District still owes VND100-million (USD4,760) from loan which they took out for the needed heart surgery of their eldest son.
Meanwhile, his wife and his two other children are on daily medication just to be able to work.
Mr. Khoe and his wife got married 30 years ago and work as hired labourers harvesting rice. However, it has become more difficult to find work, as machinery is replacing manual labour, adding to their financial difficulties.
Over the past five years, his wife and three children have been stricken with disease. His 28-year-old eldest child, Nguyen Van Lam, suffers from congenital heart disease. Mr. Khoe had to borrow VND25 million at a very high interest rate to pay for the operation. The hospital allowed him to pay the remaining VND100 million later.
Khoe himself is also in bad health, and his wife suffers from arthritis and high blood pressure. His youngest son has cataracts.
The family income, between Khoe and his youngest son, only comes to an average of VND70,000 (USD3.3), while their family are paying 10% interest on their VND25 million loan.
Doctor Ngo Duc Hai, from Hoan My Cuu Long General Hospital, said that Lam’s condition was extremely critical. Without the surgery, he could die any time, so the hospital decided to permit advance VND25 million for the operation and pay the rest later.
