The highway is 245 kilometres long and passes through five provinces and cities, namely Hanoi, Vinh Phuc, Phu Tho, Yen Bai and Lao Cai.

Costing nearly US$1 billion, the highway is expected to boost tourism and socio-economic development in the northern midlands and the north-western region.
It will reduce travel time between Hanoi and the Sa Pa resort town and the Lao Cai International Border Gate.
The highway will have hundreds of tunnels and crossroads.
