A poor 20-year-old man from Hau Giang Province may have little chance of surviving his illness caused by acute inflammatory neuropathy due to economic difficulties.
Le Tuan Anh is the third child in a seven-member family from Long My Hamlet. Despite their economic difficulties, Anh’s parents tried their best to send him to university because of his great appetite for learning.
However, bad luck struck the family during Anh's first term at a college in Can Tho City.

Mother finds helpless to the ill son
Ut Ba, Anh’s father, said, “My son called me and said he had a fever. I thought he just had the flu and told him to take some medicine. But three days later he called again and said that he could not get out of bed. I rushed to visit him and took him to the emergency room of Hospital 175 in HCM City.”
Bach Thanh Thuy, a doctor at the hospital, said Anh came to the hospital for respiratory problems, numbness and paralyses of four limbs. He was diagnosed with acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy.
“We’ve provided treatment that should help boost Anh's autoimmune system and replace his plasma. He also suffers from pneumonia and partial limb paralyses, so treatment would take time,” Thuy said.
In order to find the money for Anh’s treatment, his parents borrowed VND200 million (USD9.5 thousand). Now, they are unable to find any other source of funds, while medical expenses have reached into the millions of VND per day.
Over the past week, Anh’s situation has got worse, as he did not receive enough medicine.

Little chance to survive due economic difficulties
Many of their relatives advised the parents to take Anh home to wait for the worst, but they have refused to give up.
“Being parents, we don’t have the heart to abandon our son. Still, I don’t know how we're going to get the money to pay for further treatment,” the father said.
Huynh Van Duong, head of Long Hung 2 Hamlet, said Anh’s family is in a desperate situation. Local residents have donated a combined 60 kilos of rice and VND800,000 (USD37.9), but the amount is too little to solve their problems.
“Anh’s father intended to sell their house but no one wants to buy it, as the land does not really belong to them. It was lent by another resident. Now they have are at a complete impasse,” Duong added.
