A poor young couple from Dong Thap Province is struggling to find enough money to treat their 5-month old daughter who suffers from several health problems.
Baby needs an operation
Le Thi Mong Cam was born last November to: Le Van Hoa, 24 and La Thi Cam Tan, 19. Apart from her congenital heart disease, she also suffers from chronic pneumonia and several other illnesses, forcing her to have frequent stays at the hospital.
“We have to send our baby to hospital regularly due to her illness. Many times, she got ill just a few days after being released,” the mother said.
Cam’s parents did not know about her inborn heart disease until doctors at Dong Thap provincial hospital sent her to Pediatrics Hospital 1 in HCM City for further examination.
Doctors said Cam should have surgery as soon as possible. However, her illness and the parents’ lack of money have postponed treatment.
Family in desperate situation
The father said, “In order to treat Cam we decided to move to Binh Duong province with my parents in law. While my wife stays at home to take care of our children, I work for a furniture factory, earning VND2 million (USD94.7) per month. The sum is hardly enough to cover our living costs, let alone paying for surgery,” the father said.
Vo Van Pho, Chairman of Hoa Long Commune in Lai Vung District, their hometown, said the family is in desperate straits and really unable to continue treatment for their baby while having to feed their first twin children who are just two years old.
Young woman with an abundance of hardship
Due to their modest income, they dare to take their baby to hospital again but opt to buy medication and take care of her at home.
“Now we don’t know what to do with her. We don't know how we can get her the surgery,” the father said.
