For 10 years, trash in Can Tho City was dumped at Tan Long landfill in Hau Giang Province. After this landfill was shut down, O Mon became the main landfill for Can Tho City and receives up to 300 tonnes of trash each day.
However, people who live near the landfill complained that the trash was left untreated for months, causing pollution to the area. They tried to block the gate on April 20 and demand that the landfill be shut down.
Because the road to the landfill is blocked, Can Tho City Urban Construction Company said they were only able to collect 30% of the garbage on the streets. Authorities are using every dumping ground available, even those that have been closed for years.
Huynh Tam Tri, of the Can Tho City Urban Construction Company, said the authorities of Can Tho City asked to dump one day's trash in Vinh Long Province but the situation is worrisome because Can Tho City produces 400 tonnes of trash each day.
Speaking with VTV, Nguyen Thach Em, Deputy Director of Can Tho City Urban Construction Company, said, "We have to divide up the current amount of garbage to dump at various landfills in the city. We'll work with private firms to deal with what remains."
People are worried about the serious sanity and health issues that may arise if the garbage is not dealt with quickly, it could cause illnesses, especially under the current heat and humid. The plan to build a garbage treatment plant for Can Tho City has been on the table for years, but they have not reached any agreement on suitable technology and contractors.
