A poor couple in the southern province of Bac Lieu is asking for help from the community to save their 13-year old daughter who suffers from a strange disease.
The disease, which has tortured Le Thi Diem from birth, has caused her belly and left hand to grow abnormally large, while her right hand is stunted.
Diem has been facing with the strange disease from birth
Dang Ut Muoi, 33, is Diem’s mother. She said that when her daughter was born, she was given breast milk, but she often vomited. Doctors said that she has a turmour in her hand and her belly was bloated from water retention.
The couple had to sell all their valuables and borrow money from anyone who would lend to them in order to get medical care for their daughter. Still, her condition did not improve.
The situation became worse when Diem became ill with other diseases, including a turmour in her ovaries and pneumonia.
For many years, Diem’s parents have worked as hired labourers, and their financial situation has always been difficult.
Besides Diem, they had two other daughters, one aged ten and the other seven.

Every month, they spend nearly VND2 million (USD95.2) on medication for Diem, a considerable amount for the poor couple. Now, Mr. and Mrs. Muoi must also stay at home in turn to take care of their ailing daughter.
Despite struggling with her diseases, Diem goes to school every day and manages to keep up her grades. She said she wishes to become a doctor.
