Mother and son fight with cancer

A mother and her son from Nghe An Province have been struggling with cancer for years while in poverty.

A mother and her son from Nghe An Province have been struggling with cancer for years while in poverty.

Vo Thi Cuu was born with a scoliosis and bumps on her body. Feeling lonely after the death of both of parents, Cuu sought out a donor in order to have a child. She has never exposed the father's identity and promised to take the secret to her grave.

But her son also has many bumps on his body. An especially large one has taken over half of the back of his head. Despite her worries, Cuu could not afford to take him to hospital.

"He is not as mentally developed as other children his age and do not have money, so he dropped out in the ninth grade. He washes vehicles but the income is so little. There are times we have to make compensations to the company because he would break something," Cuu said.

Meanwhile, due to her health, Cuu is unable to work on the rice field so she works as baby-sister for the neighbours. Three years ago, she took all of the savings and borrowed money from relatives in order to take her son to hospital.

The doctors removed the tumour on his head but said he needed at least two more surgeries. Cuu was supposed to bring him in the next year, but they had nothing more to pay with. Meanwhile the tumour gets worse.

Then Cuu started to get pains her chest. She tried to endure the pain until it became unbearable. At Nghe An Oncology Hospital, Cuu was diagnosed with breast cancer and advised to undergo chemotherapy. However, one week in hospital drained everything she had, so Cuu returned home.

Cuu's son dropped his job to stay home with her. She said, "Our rice smell musty, it was ruined, but we have nothing else to eat."

Her tumour has ulcerated but she can only afford herbal drugs and advice. Sometimes, kind-hearted neghbours give her a bit of money to help her buy medicine. According to Cuu, her biggest concern now is what would happen to her son after she died.

"I don't care what happens to me but please help my mother," said Cuu's son, Ho Sy Anh.
