A poor family in the central province of Quang Nam has both a mother and son suffering from nephrotic syndrome.

Every two days, To Thi Nam, 56 years old, and her son must go to the hospital for the treatment, costing millions of VND per month.
Her house has nothing of value except an old TV, Nam said. The family has sold everything valuable to pay for the treatment in recent years.
Her husband, Pham Bon, is now the sole breadwinner of the family. He has to work very hard to earn money for hospital fees.
She added that, five years ago, her second son, Pham Ba Vuong, 27 years old, also fell ill. Her family had to try to save him so that he could recover and get married. However, the situation finally became hopeless as his condition did not improve. He now has to live with kidney problems and go to the hospital for treatment three times per week in order to survive.
Two years ago, she also contracted the same kidney disease as her second son. Sometimes, they have high fevers and a seizures and need to be rushed to the emergency room.
In September, her eldest son, Pham Ba Vu, 29 years old, died from an electric shock, leaving his ailing wife and two small children behind.
Despite having insurance cards, Nam and her son must spend additional VND2 million (USD95.2) per month for the treatment. This money is beyond of their abilities, particularly now they cannot do heavy work. The whole family depends on her husband who is also often ill.
Pham Van Phuc, Vice Chairman of the Father Front of Dai Chanh Commune, said Nam’s family has is in a much more difficult position now that she and her son suffer with the kidney problems. He called on donors to support them.
