A 12 year-old boy in Quang Nam Province is struggling to live after he lost both hands and suffers serious leg injuries after he stumbled onto a landmine.

 Hieu in hospital

After stumbling on a landmine left over from the war, Phan Trong Hieu now stays at the Department of Burns and Reconstructive Surgery of the Danang General Hospital. His sister, who studies at Quang Nam University, is taking care of him while she is on a break before exams.

Phan Van Nhi, Hieu's father, said they have five kids and are all farmers so their income is only enough to cover the daily expenses. Because of poverty, the first two daughters had to drop out when they were in secondary schools to work. Even though they all got married, their situations has not gotten any better.

To help family, Hieu used to take the cows and bulls out for grazing. The accident occurred on November 30, when he was walking on a hill called A37, Hieu accidentally triggered a old bomb. Ever since Hieu has been in hospital, Nhi's health also went bad, causing him to fall ill often.

His hands amputated and his legs seriously injured

Dr Nguyen Quoc Viet said, "When Hieu was brought to hospital, he was polytraumatised. His two hands and femur were broken and he had multiple wounds on the abdomen. We had to amputate both of his hands and cut off some skin from his thighs. We intend to graft the 12% lost of skin to him next week, however, he has a high risk of acquiring an infection. Hieu needs a long-term treatment and he may not be able to recover completely."

Viet further said many things in Hieu's treatments are not covered by health insurance, and the therapy costs VND5-6 million each session.

Hieu's family said the hospital agreed to lend them VND25 million (USD1,200) for now. However, they have been unable to work since Hieu was injured and hospital fees are a huge burden for them.
