A poor family in the northern province of Thai Binh is in desperate need of help from the community, as all three members are suffering from serious injuries and illnesses.
The mother is a victim of heart failure, while her son is paralysed due to a traffic accident and the father is struggling with kidney failure.
Pham Van Lich was staying at Bach Mai Hospital
Pham Van Lich in Dong Phu Commune, Dong Hung District, was taken to Bach Mai Hospital on November 21 for emergency treatment as a result of serious acute stomach pain. At that time, his condition was very critical, so he was given a blood infusion and a programme of antibiotics to deal with bacterial infection. Meanwhile, he also suffered from malnutrition.
The patient has seen improvement, but the family has asked doctors repeatedly to allow him to return home because they can not afford any more to pay hospital fees. However, under doctors advice, he stayed at the hospital to ensure his safety and the family is obligated to pay hospital fees. He does not have a insurance health card, while, but his condition is still serious, costing VND5 million (USD238) per day.
Pham Thi Tham, Lich’s sister, said, “His only son had a traffic accident in June 2013. His family tried to borrow money from many people to provide him treatment. However, due to the financial burden. He had to leave hospital to return home. He is now completely paralysed, so his mother has had to give up her job to stay at home to take care of him. Meanwhile, Lich’s wife also suffers from serious heart failure.”
Mrs. Tham said in tears that she and some relatives sought to borrow money to help Lich’s family, but they did not know how to do.
“My brother had two boys, but the first died of cerebral palsy at the age of eight, and the second died of drowning at 14. Now, his only son, Toan, is paralysed due to the traffic accident,” Tham said.
