A boy in Thai Nguyen Province is struggling with kidney failure in its final stage but is still hoping for a day when he can go back to school.
Trong wishes to return to school on time
The 12-year-old boy Le Duc Trong, from Tan My 2 Village in Song Cong Town, has to stay at the nephrology and urology department of the National Hospital of Pediatrics.
About a year ago, Trong started to get stomach ache and nausea, and he was diagnosed with gastritis but his health did not improve after one month of treatment. After Trong was moved to the National Hospital of Pediatrics in Hanoi, he was diagnosed with stage 4 chronic kidney failure.
Hoang Thi Nhung, Trong's mother, was shocked at the news. "He can't be cured; his life is only being prolonged." she said.
Trong suffers from pain
Even though pain tortures him everyday, Trong still asks his mother to make calls to his teachers, saying "I'm going to be healthy soon and I'll go back to school." In addition, Trong is really excited about the first day of the school year on September 5.
Trong's parents are poor farmers so they were soon unable to pay the hospital charges. "Each month, Trong has to stay at hospital at least two or three weeks for fluid infusion. We have health insurance but we can't keep up with the transport fees and medicines costs." Nhung said, "I told him that I'll buy him a new shirt to go to school after we return home."
Trong family's finances exhausted after one year
After one year, Trong's parents now owe hundreds of millions of VND to relatives and banks. However, they have no choice when Trong's is in the final stage of the illness which has also badly affected other organs as well. Trong's family also has to pay for cardiovascular drugs.
Sometimes, Trong will cry because of the unbearable pain. "I'll borrow money as long as I can but I have nowhere to turn now." Trong's mother said.
