A six month-old baby girl in Thanh Hoa Province is faced with a disease of the heart valves and serious malnutrition problems which mean she weighs just 3 kilogrammes.

No one can hold back their tears when they see the little girl, Nguyen Thi Dung, in Hoang Hoa District, with a swollen belly and skinny legs. She seems to be almost too exhausted to fight the disease.
She was born around the time her brother died in a traffic accident at the age of 20, and now her father is more than 50 years old and her mother is nearly the same age. The couple were determined to have the girl despite their ages, but, unfortunately, they suffered great pain in the process.
The mother said that three years ago, her son had to stop his studies to come to the southern region to earn money, however, just a few months later, he died in a traffic accident. The person who caused his death ran away and the family had to borrow money to take his body to their hometown for the funeral. To date, the debt has not yet been fully settled.
Dung was born in these difficult times, weighing 3 kilos but showing no health problems. Yet, just two months later, she stopped breast-feeding and her limbs started becoming smaller, while her belly got bigger. She was diagnosed with valvular disease of the heart and critical malnutrition.
After one month of treatment at Thanh Hoa Pediatrics Hospital, the little girl has seen no improvement-- with limbs becoming smaller and smaller. Recently, she was sent to the National Hospital of Pediatrics, but her health condition still stayed the same, while the family’s financial condition has deteriorated, her life is just a faint hope.
When staying at Thanh Hoa Pediatrics Hospital, her mother had to beg powdered milk for her from other patients because it's too costly for her to buy a box of milk for the girl.
Nguyen Thi Van, Head of the Digestion Ward from Thanh Hoa Pediatrics Hospital, said Dung is not only suffering from serious malnutrition but also from the inborn heart disease. She has been brought back to our hospital after being sent to the National Pediatrics Hospital in Hanoi, due to her family’s difficult condition. The doctors are still trying to save her.
