A landslide along about 2 kilometres of the Huu Thao Dyke, in Phu Tho Province, has put thousands of households in danger.

Locals worry about complete dyke collapse
The incident has affected households in eight communes in Tam Nong District in the wake of Storm No. 2. The storm caused widespread damage to the communities affected. Nearly half of the dyke itself has been damaged or destroyed.
The Huu Thao Dyke is situated along Thao River, and was built to protect eight communes in the north of Tam Nong District from flooding. It was built about 30 years ago, manually, using soil. There are now concerns that the entire dyke may collapse.
Several locals said have said that they have been worried about this for several years. The last dyke breach occurred in 1971, causing a large amount of damage to the surrounding households.
To prevent any further loss, the steering board for flood and storm damage control has instructed the People’s Committee of Thanh Uyen Commune to relocate all local residents and their belongings to safer places.
