Australian Consul General John McAnulty stressed that Vietnam is among most important partners of Australia in the region.
The diplomat made the statement at a ceremony held in Ho Chi Minh City on March 27 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries.
Both sides are cooperating in a number of key areas like education, development assistance, trade, investment, security, trans-national crime prevention.
In infrastructure field, Australia provided financial support for the construction of My Thuan, a cable-stayed bridge connecting Cai Be District of Tien Giang and Vinh Long city of Vinh Long province. The country also committed to contributing US$168 million dollar for building another major bridge in the Mekong Delta.
Regarding trade ties, the two-way trade grew over 20%/year and reached US$5 billion in 2012, or 150 times compared to 20 years ago.
As of February this year, Australia had 111 projects with total investment of US$157.2 million.
