Many of these workers come from the central province of Nghe An, who are working South Korea, Taiwan and Malaysia.

They have prepared traditional dishes for Tet.

Hoang Thi Soa, 47, from Nghe An's Hung Nguyen District, has worked as a domestic help in Taiwan for eight years.

"In the previous years, I celebrated Tet with some of my Vietnamese relatives and friends. This year, however, they all have returned home, leaving me alone. I feel homesick and miss my family and children very much," Soa said.

Soa used some alternative materials to make chung cake

Soa decided to make chung cake on her own. As Taiwanese also celebrate the new year it was easy to find the ingredients, except for la dong leaves which are used to wrap the cake. She had to use banana leaves instead.

It took half a day for her to complete the making ten cakes.

"While my landlord tried the cake and said they liked it, I just cried because I was homesick," Soa added.

Cao Van Dung, 73, from Yen Thanh District has worked in Malaysia for six years.

"We have two days off for lunar new year. We prepared pork and made chung cake. I will return home next year," Dung said.

Those who work in South Korea also had two to three days off for Tet.

Missing home while spending Tet abroad

This is the second year that Nguyen Thai Nam, 29, has spent Tet away from home. "Last Tet we made chung cake. At that time I missed my family so much. This year, we've adapted with life abroad and decided to go out and enjoy ourselves instead," he noted.

Nguyen Dinh Hoa, 31, said that there was a Vietnamese food store near his home. They had no time to make chung cake but bought Vietnamese food. Almost all Vietnamese workers in South Korea marked the event.
