A Quang Ninh police officer who died while on duty attempting to stop chicken smugglers has had his rank increased posthumously.

Second lieutenant Bui Van Binh, 25, was deputy head of Quang Ninh provincial police’s protection and mobile police platoon.

On January 12, Binh together with two colleagues was assigned to use a seven-seat car to track a motorbike carrying illegally imported chicken.

Due to thick fog their vehicle fell 10 metres off the road in Mong Cai City’s Quang Nghia Commune. The incident left two policemen injured and Binh dead.

On the morning of January 14, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan offered a tribute to Binh and comforted his family.
