This morning "Storm No.8" hit hard on northern coastal regions, including the provinces of Haiphong and Quang Ninh, leaving at least ten missing.
According to statistics from the National Centre for Hydro-Metrological Forecasting, the storm had wind levels up to 11 recorded in areas stretching from Ninh Binh Province to Haiphong City.
Strong winds caused the collapse of a broadcast tower in Nam Dinh Province, with a loss of VND40 billion (USD1.9 million).
Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation has sent two helicopters to save 35 of their own staff members located at oil rig GFS KEY HAWAI, about 14 nautical miles north of Bach Long Vi Island, Hai Phong City.
The Chairman of Cat Hai Island in Haiphong, Bui Trung Nghia, said that even though the storm has passed, there are still at least seven known missing. Among those missing were five sailors from ships that were wrecked off of Cat Ba Island.
Two others were reported missing in Quang Ninh Province.
Damages
The provinces incurred heavy damages, including the oyster-producing industry in Nga Son District in Thanh Hoa Province and the broken dyke linking the islands of Hon Co and Hon La
Normal life has been disrupted, making it impossible for many students to go to school, and many households in Thanh Hoa and Nghe An provinces have been forced to relocate.
Even Hanoi was affected, with winds measured up to levels four to five, causing a number of trees to fall.
Power losses in many localities in Thai Binh Province have still not been rectified.
