The quake is believed to be the strongest that local people have felt since the hydropower plant was operational.

Local authorities said the tremor, occurred at 11:00am on Sept. 23 and lasted for about 10 seconds, was measured 4.1 on the Richter scale.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage, according to a Tuoi Tre contributor at the scene.

However, he added that the quake has caused more cracks in houses after shaking of the ground, causing panic among thousands of local residents.

This was the fourth tremor in the area in less than 24 hours, local officials said.

Previously, the area was hit by three tremors of different intensities which occurred at 3:14am, 4:00am, and 4:15am on Sept. 3 respectively.

In related news, more than 200 people including officials and teachers in the district have participated in earthquake drills to gain basic skills to reduce the impact of an expected quake.

Meanwhile, local experts have concluded in a recent meeting that the recent quakes in Bac Tra My district were only reservoir-induced seismic activities taking place at the Song Tranh 2 Hydropower Plant.

They explained that induced seismic activity refers to typically minor earthquakes and tremors that are caused by human activity that alters the stresses and strains on the Earth's crust.
