All six members of the Vietnamese team won medals at the 53th International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) in Mar Del Plata, Argentina.

Three students, Nguyen Ta Dung and Nguyen Phuong Minh, both from 12th grade at the High School Gifted Students, and Nguyen Hung Lam from the Hanoi – Amsterdam High School won silver medals.
The two bronze medals went to Le Quang Lam from the 12th grade at Lam Son High School in Thanh Hoa Province and Tran Hoang Bao Linh, a 11th grader from the High School for Gifted Students at Vietnam National University, HCM City.
IMO 2012 attracted 548 competitors from 100 countries. In total, 277 medals were given away, including 51 gold, 88 silver and 138 bronze.
The first IMO took place in Romania in 1959, with participants from 7 countries. The contest, for high school students under the age of 20, is held in a different country each year.
This is the 36th IMPO that Vietnam has participated in. Vietnam hosted the IMO for the first time in 2007.
