Over 400 students were attending classes at Tran Phu Middle School and all evacuated from the classrooms by their teachers, principal Tran Thi Thanh Ha told Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper.

Seven of the school’s classrooms suddenly had their beams and walls cracked and broken during the morning’s class sessions, Ha said.

Tran Thi Bich Hoa, a teacher of physics at the school, recalled she heard a sudden loud noise before the beam and walls of the classroom where she was teaching quickly snapped off.

No injuries or casualties have been reported so far, the principal confirmed.

It is fast deteriorating as the construction dates back to more than 36 years ago, according to principal Ha. A new school is still under construction, she said.

Site clearance problems have as yet hindered the completion of the new school, the newspaper says.

The school has been closed down till now for fear of real collapse.

Down south, students at many elementary schools in the southern province of Tien Giang have to take shelter under their desks during heavy rain because the classrooms are in similar deteriorating conditions.

At least one student has been reported to be hurt by a concrete slab which fell down from his classroom’s shattered roof.
