The Do Son Buffalo Fighting Festival on September 6 and 7 drew thousands of visitors to the city of Haiphong, making the popular event something to be remembered.
Two gladiators
16 buffalos from the seven wards id Do Son District were chosen to this final round. The buffalos were divided into eight pairs and competed to fight against each other for the semi-final event.
Hoang Trung Chinh, a member of the organising committee, said that the 16 buffaloes this year had been chosen and taken care of very well, making it hard to predict who the winner would be.
Buffalo number 30 won the tournament, bringing his lucky owner the prize of VND40 million (USD1,923).
The winning buffalo was not so fortunate as traditionally at the conclusion of the festival it is slaughtered and its prized ‘lucky’ meat sold at VND1.5 million (USD72.11) per kilo.
