Those eligible to apply for scholarships included high school, pre-university, undergraduate and post graduate students. There are two scholarships worth a total of VND200 million for students studying abroad, one valued at VND100 million for a student going to study in the U.S. and another 10 valued at a total of VND150 million for students studying in Vietnam.
The three main winners, who will be recognized at the HCMC-based British Council, were Ha Mai Quyen, who will study at Saint Andrew’s School in the U.S., Dinh Ngoc Thuy who will go to the University of Canberra in Australia and Le Minh Dung who will study at Newcastle University in the U.K.
Alison Ball, director of British Council in HCMC and country exams manager, told the award ceremony held on Wednesday in the city: “Young people in Vietnam are already well aware that learning English opens so many doors to them. With these scholarships we can take that even further - we’re able to help people take their first steps in international education. The winning scholars come from six cities and provinces in Vietnam, including Can Tho, Binh Duong, Binh Thuan, An Giang, Hanoi and HCMC. And they will begin their courses in the U.S., the U.K, Australia and Vietnam at top universities, high schools and institutions this year.
The award was fiercely contested with the number of applicants increasing five fold. The final 13 scholars were chosen following a series of evaluation stages including applications reviews, an English interview and English presentations on subjects including English teaching and how the award would benefit the applicant.
