After the Sparkassen chess event in Dortmund, Germany, international grandmaster Le Quang Liem of Vietnam will leave for Russia to compete at the World Chess Cup to be held in Khanty Mansiysk from August 26 – September 21.
Le Quang Liem, who is the world’s No.27 with an Elo rating of 2,715, will take on Indonesian Susanto Megaranto with Elo 2,544 in the first round. Vietnam’s other competitor, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, will face Li Chao from China.
128 chess players from 46 countries will participate in the chess tournament in Russia.
The Vietnam Chess Federation’s general secretary Luong Trong Minh said the federation would spend USD8,000 to hire a qualified coach to help Liem during the 3-week tournament in Khanty Mansiysk.
In two previous years, Liem got eliminated in the opening round.
At last week’s Sparkassen Chess Meeting in Germany, Liem finished second out of 6 world-class competitors.
