HCM City provides more care to disadvantaged children

HCM City plans to invest VND30 billion in five projects to heighten protection for underprivileged children.

HCM City plans to invest VND30 billion (USD1.45 million) in five projects to heighten protection for underprivileged children.

Homeless, disadvantaged children provided with proper education

These projects are expected to be carried out between 2011 and 2015, and will focus on education, training cadres for child protection, developing child protection services, and providing some money to disadvantaged children to support their lives.

The overall purpose of these projects is to create a safe and healthy living environment for these children in order to prevent possible risks of sexual abuse, violence, and labour abuses.

Hua Ngoc Thuan, Vice Chairman of HCM City Municipal People’s Commitee has requested that the city’s Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs coordinate with local authorities to pilot these projects in districts that have larger number of underprivileged children.

According to the department, the city now has 70,000 children living in underprivileged conditions. The figure accounts for 10% of the city\'s children.

Of the total, 1,450 children are homeless, 13,800 have disabilities, and 600 are being forced to work in unsafe conditions.
