Bogus company cheats dozens of people

A bogus company in Danang has cheated many people through its "win-a-car programme", taking up to $970 from each.

A bogus company in Danang City has been cheating many people through its "win-a-car programme", taking VND10-VND20 million (USD485.4-USD970.9) from each.

The SAVICO building

The victims said that they bought electronic items from Dai Phat Company in hopes of winning an automobile. They promised customers that, upon purchase of an item, the customer would be entered into a sweepstakes that might win them a car.

The company said their headquarters was on the 2nd floor of the SAVICO, 66 Vo Van Tan Street, Thanh Khe District, Danang.

After the contest, many customers received phone calls from Dai Phat\'s representatives, informing that they\'d won a vehicle that was worth VND380-500 million (USD18,500-USD24,400).

The "winners" were then asked to transfer VND10-20 million (USD485.4-USD970.87) to the company’s account for the cars\' registration and insurance fees, before they could pick up the vehicle.

Nguyen Thi An was among the victims. On June 9, after transferring the registration fee, she flew from Ho Chi Minh City to Danang to collect the car. When she came to Danang, however, she was shocked to find there was none waiting for her. The phone number that she had from Dai Phat was not operational.

An, who paid VND22 million (USD1,067), was not the only victim. Nguyen Hong Quan, from District 12, also thought he won a car worth VND380 million, and paid fees to the fake company.

Le Dinh Tuan, manager of the SAVICO building, where Dai Phat was supposedly based, said that they have received hundreds of phone calls from customers about prizes.

Another representative from SAVICO building management board said, during their five years of operation, there has been no company called "Dai Phat" located in the building.
