Storm claims 14 lives, risks of flash floods

Storm Haima devastated the northern provinces of Vietnam, leaving 14 dead, 81 injured and thousands of houses damaged.

Storm Haima devastated the northern provinces of Vietnam, leaving 14 dead, 81 injured and thousands of houses damaged by Friday (June 24).

According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the storm is likely to cause flash flooding in northern mountainous areas.

Heavy rain lashed the north of country, hitting Tuong Duong District, Nghe An Province, sweeping away two houses and leaving 80 flooded. The communes of Yen Tinh, Yen Na and Yen Hoa experienced downpours of 170-190 mm.

The northern port city of Haiphong has been the hardest hit with six deaths and 79 injuries. Up to 1,021 local houses and 12 classrooms had their roofs torn off.

Heavy overnight rain on June 22 swept four people away who were fishing in Nam Khat Commune, Mu Cang Chai District, Lao Cai Province. Only one body has been recovered.

Four people were struck by lightning on June 23, including two farmers in Nam Dinh Province, one woman in Thanh Hoa Province and one man in Thai Binh Province.

Vietnam Airlines said the storm had forced the carrier to cancel six flights on the Danang-Haiphong, Ho Chi Minh City-Haiphong and Vinh-Hanoi routes.

The airline is arranging flights for passengers whose flights were cancelled by the storm.

Flash floods and landslides

Storm Haima has weakened into a tropical depression after moving inland from the coastal areas of Haiphong City and Ninh Binh Province. It has brought torrential rain to the northern and northern-central region, with downpours of over 100 mm in some localities.

The National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting warned that the storm could trigger flash floods and landslides in northern mountainous areas.

By 7pm today (June 25), the storm’s centre would have crossed to upper Laos, with wind gusts weakening.

Vietnam\'s coastal forces said they sent out warnings to more than 50,000 fishing ships operating in the East Sea on Thursday.

The Ministry of Health ordered local medical centres to prepare for 24-hour medical coverage for those affected by the storm.
