Vietnam gained significant achievements in all aspects in 2010 despite various challenges and difficulties, noted State President Nguyen Minh Triet at a recent interview.

The President hailed the country’s high economic growth momentum through the whole year, with the GDP grew 6.7% and people’s life was stabilized amid global fragile economic recovery.

International sponsors continued to show their confidence in Vietnam’s macro-economic stability by pledging to provide the country with US $7.9 billion of official assistance at the  consultation group’s meeting in Hanoi last year.

In terms of diplomacy, the State leader stressed the country’s important role in consolidating and enhancing ASEAN’s connectivity and prestige through the year that Vietnam took the Chair of ASEAN, particularly the 17th ASEAN Summit.

Vietnam was appraised by the United Nations’ members as one of the best example for realizing the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) at its recent conference to review 10 year- implementation of  the MDGs.

Various diplomatic activities have contributed to elevating the country’s role and prestige, cementing ties with friends around the world, President Triet said.

Beside the fundamental achievements, the State President also pointed out some shortcomings and weaknesses, such as low economic competitiveness, price escalation.

“What we need to do now is to look straight into the problems and find out reasons,” said President Triet.

He added that Vietnam needs to continue taking advantages of a 86 million-population market to maintain economic stability in the future.

More capital should also be poured in agriculture development to secure farmers’ life, he noted.

The successful experiences we gained in the past year will help consolidate the entire people’s confidence in addressing greater challenges ahead, the State leader highlighted.

Vietnam has overcome the hardest time to become a middle-income country which lays a firm foundation for it to attain quicker, more stable development in the coming decades.
