Vietnam’s “Island Governor” claims assets over $2billion

Nicknamed the “Island Governor”, Dao Hong Tuyen, Chairman of Tuan Chau Group’s Board of Directors, has claimed his assets are worth about $2billion U.S. dollars.

Nicknamed the “Island Governor”, Dao Hong Tuyen, Chairman of Tuan Chau Group’s Board of Directors, has claimed his assets are worth about $2billion U.S. dollars.

Mr Dao Hong Tuyen is among the richest people in vietnam

The claim suggests that Tuyen is among the richest people in Vietnam and counters rumours that he was in financial trouble. He owns 14 companies and 34 factories nationwide, in addition to the Tuan Chau international tourism island in the northern province of Quang Ninh.

The claim was a move by Tuyen to clear up a recent rumour that he has multiple wives, owes thousands of Vietnam dong and has to sell the Tuan Chau island to cover his debts.

Rumours surfaced that Tuyen had bank debts worth up to VND4 trillion (USD200 million) and couldn’t settle it.

Meanwhile, he explained, “I officially want to state that the rumour is a pure fabrication. I hired a South Korean company to manage services at Tuan Chau island but their performance was unacceptable. Last year, they returned to their motherland.”

When asked about the key to his success, Tuyen said, “I do what people do not or what they just think about but cannot do.”

He said a good example was a road linking to Tuan Chau island, noting that no one else dared to do that. Many people said he was crazy when he shared his plan to build such a road.

Tuan Chau island became well-known after the construction of the road. Tuyen plans to boost services there by building a seaport to receive 100 modern yachts plus a golf course. The seaport facilitates traveling to Cat Ba island as it takes only 20 minutes.

He also plans to build a block of luxurious villas in Tuan Chau to provide tourists with better views to Ha Long Bay, a world’s wonder, in addition to the improvement of accommodation services.

He revealed that he will never forget his hard life in the past when he often wandered streets at night and stayed at Tan Dan flower garden in Ho Chi Minh City. Once, a thief even stole his plastic sandals which were his only belonging at the time.

“I did manual work such as clearing pig waste and working as a waiter at a wine-house. One night, when I was as hungry as a wolf and stayed in an auto garage as a favour, I was fully aware of the coldness and hunger as well as the shameful feeling for being poor. It was that night when I told myself to become a rich man in Vietnam,” the Island Governor shared.

He says he dreams about great things and if others don’t, they may not succeed in life or make breakthroughs.

Tuyen was born in 1954 in Quang Yen area in Quang Ninh province. He came to Ho Chi Minh City (formerly known as Saigon) to do business after the national reunification in 1975.

The Government approved his project to build the Tuan Chau international urban-tourism-entertainment area in Tuan Chau island of Ha Long Bay in July 1999. The project cost over USD400 million and was implemented by Au Lac Co., Ltd, which is a member of Tuan Chau Group.
